  • Free Tax-Related Debt Presentation
In Hawaii, over 47,000 people earning less than $50,000 owed the IRS $51 Million after filing their 2013 tax returns.  One bad financial decision that results in a balance due to the IRS and/or the State can deplete savings, increase credit card debt (yes–the IRS accepts credit cards), and render a carefully planned budget useless. Attend this presentation to learn more. • AmeriCorps VISTA Position - Application Period Closed

Thank you to all of the great applicants who applied for the HACBED AmeriCorps VISTA position:…

This position was extremely competitive, as we received a very high volume of applications (more than we have ever received for a VISTA position before). We were very impressed with all of the applicants, but unfortunately, could only choose one. Best of luck to all the prospective VISTA's. We have no doubt that you will be able to find a VISTA position that best suits your excellent skills and expertise.

Who are we?

The Hawai'i Alliance for Community-Based Economic Development (HACBED) is a statewide, federally tax-exempt, non-profit organization. HACBED was established in 1992 to encourage an increase in investments in sustainable and community-based approaches to economic development.

Hawaii Alliance for Community Based Economic Development

Our Mission

HACBED strives to...

  • address social, economic, and environmental injustice in Hawai'i through community-based economic development and
  • help strengthen the voice and actions of Hawai'i's families and communities so that they have the choice and control they need to become self-sufficient and resilient.

Pursuit of Our Mission

Above all, HACBED serves this place called Hawai'i, as well as those who choose to be of this place and work to make it their home. In particular, HACBED has a strong focus on those who face social and economic injustices. HACBED provides this service by empowering education and capacity building for communities through policy development and advocacy for positive systemic change.

A "competitive advantage" is defined as "resources that allow an entity to develop and maintain an edge over competitors who produce similar goods and services." HACBED's competitive advantages stem from its knowledge and experience as it relates to community engagement and the connections HACBED has been able to form. This advantage is founded on the belief that people “know” and “can” and is conducted through informed and skilled “listening” that strengthens the community voice and and promotes collective action. By focusing on its competitive advantages. HACBED is able to build trust and credibility while maintaining its “activist” roots, which involve addressing injustice by acting to change things that are wrong.

HACBED is sustained by...

  • the relationships and trust that has been developed in order to advance the cause of social, economic, and environmental justice that serve this place – Hawai`i,
  • the ability to bring value to efforts that build community voice and collective action, and
  • the ability to refine and expand on the ideal mix of funding and financing to advance the organizations work and mission.
