Transit Oriented Community Based Economic Development (Transit Oriented CBED) - Phase II

Ala Moana/Sheridan/Kaheka (AMSK) neighborhood is an attractive area for encouraging more services to develop into a “primary care village” as theme mainly because of the centrality to major health facilities in urban Honolulu, the existence of recreational, shopping and other commercial services and its proximity to downtown. In a random survey in Phase I of Transit Oriented CBED, AMSK neighborhood residents expressed the values and themes of aging in place and a healthy village for AMSK, which were again validated through focus group discussion and survey in phase II of Transit Oriented CBED.

AMSK is less affected by HCDA revised Kaka’ako Mauka area plan and city’s proposed high capacity transit system compared to Central Kaka’ako. Of major interest to the neighborhood due to its significant location was a proposed major sports complex master plan for McKinley High School.

What would be your recommendation(s) if we start work today?

These are some comments from November 30 meeting:

•     I have a concern about converting Pi’ikoi and Pensacola. Please do demo project to show impact on traffic. The conversion is intended to impact pedestrian safety. Kapi’olani mauka to be changed

•     Include housing for young couples/families near senior housing

•     There is potential for park and ride around Kona Street

•     YMCA is interested in relocating – depends if there is a private buffer

•     Would Pensacocla/Queen become two way?

•     Median in Pensacola – help elderly cross safety.
