All of the groups take an empowerment approach to community and economic development – creating an environment that supports individuals, families, and communities in empowering themselves to address their own issues by building on their assets and resources.
They come from all of the islands of Hawai`i.
Our primary customers are nonprofit organizations that are:
- Community-based – meaning they work towards developing an effective mechanism for ongoing community participation, involvement, and control of the organization;
- Developing an economic development venture – meaning they have a program, project or business that is designed to increase economic opportunity by creating jobs, supporting businesses, or helping residents generate income, build assets, and become financially self-sufficient; and
- Working towards social, economic or environmental justice, including promoting cultural appreciation or preservation, environmental protection, sustainable development, increased community capacity, increased community control of assets and production, or serving low-income individuals and families.
The groups that HACBED has worked with can be characterized as follows:
- 88% organizations have a primary mission of serving low to moderate income individuals, families, and/or communities.
- 39% are attempting to address social and economic issues that have arisen due to sugar or pineapple plantation closures.
- 35% focus on addressing the social and economic concerns of Native Hawaiian individuals, families, and/or communities.
