Sustainable Community Food Center Network at HACBED

The Hawaii Sustainable Community Food Center Network (Hawaii SCFCN) was designed to support parishes across the Diocese of Honolulu in transforming their parish food ministries from emergency food distribution to nutritious food sustainability. What has emerged over the past four years, however, is not merely a combination of projects and activities—ultimately, it is an organizing and mobilizing effort with food as a uniting factor and driving force. Thus, in light of the initiatives that have grown within and outside of the Diocese, this year’s work will focus on stimulating community-based and inter-generational approaches to caring for the most vulnerable, including underrepresented and low-income communities, throughout Hawaii’s parishes and communities, using aina (land, that which feeds us) based organizing and strategic network building.

Objectives of the Assignment:

1) Using pointed community outreach, assets/needs assessments, and action planning, grow an emerging resource hub and network on Hawaii Island tied to food and housing in partnership with HOPE Services Hawaii, Inc. and Pahoa-area parishes.

2) Expand regional resource network model by strengthening aina (land)-based partners on Oahu, including Hoa Aina O Makaha Farm and Leeward Coast regional parishes, as well as Windward regional parishes and Pua Foundation.

3) Provide assistance to Kipuka Lanai Farms, a community-based pig farm on Lanai, to serve as a regional food hub using strategic planning, on-the-ground technical assistance support, and community-based outreach and research.

4) Support and cultivate other related aina-based and/or inter-generational initiatives that will improve the lives of Hawaii’s most vulnerable, both in parishes and community-based organizations. Skills required include active listening, writing, adaptability, quantitative and qualitative research, ability to formulate long-range goals and consistently/flexibly assess progress, and self-motivation

Member Duties:

1) Provide technical assistance in communities’ and community-based organizations’ development of strategic action plans that (a) address the above objectives and (b) establish the Catholic Diocese of Honolulu, with its statewide network of parishes and community partners, as a major contributor to social, food, and other forms of justice.

2) Assist with the implementation of strategic action plans in communities locally, regionally, and statewide. Leverage resources to maximize the impact of actions and sustainability of efforts.

3) Support existing and emerging food- and aina (land)-based community initiatives using grant-writing, plans, tool-kits, best practices, and lessons learned from our past work.

4) Explore and establish additional opportunities and partnerships statewide to employ and scale aina-based initiatives in Hawaii’s communities. Other activities include community and organizational capacity building and community-based mapping.
