Sustainable Community Food Center Network at HACBED

The Hawaii Sustainable Community Food Center Network (SCFCN) was designed to support communities to transition from an emergency food distribution system to a more sustainable system centered around nutritious food. The work focuses on cross-collaboration and intergenerational approaches to care for the most vulnerable, including underrepresented and low-income communities using organizing and strategic network building. The work will also focus on connecting community partners to one another and/or helping individual partners to join existing networks so that organizations are able to share resources and increase the impact of their activities.

Goals of the Assignment:

1) Support individuals, families, and community organizations in developing strategies to address food insecurity through indirect support including capacity building, program design, and development assistance. Focus on cross collaboration, network facilitation, technical assistance, and resource sharing to support existing and new programs. Work with the emergency food/assistance programs programs to better assist those who receive government benefits.

2) Collaborate with community partners and families to engage them in culturally-relevant strategies to address food justice. Encourage inter-cultural dialogue, using food as an entry point to broader discussions leading to identification of specific community assets and needs.

3) Strengthen HACBED’s existing networks by supporting land-based initiatives in various communities throughout Hawaii including Waianae, Lanai, and Kohala. Facilitate spaces for reflection on community-based action and aina justice in collaboration with the network of community food system affiliates. Build new resource networks by utilizing existing resources.

4) Provide technical assistance to community partners in the form of research, the establishment/maintenance of databases, meeting facilitation, recording, transcription, and community engagement.

 

Member Duties:

1) Support existing/emerging food- and land-related community initiatives by creating and/or utilizing action plans. Support implementation of plans with technical assistance, including databases, mapping products, and social media engagement.

2) Conduct various types of research (historical, demographic, etc.) and data collection for reports and grant applications.

3) Leverage resources to maximize the impact of actions and sustainability of efforts with activities such as research, grant writing support, and community engagement.

4) Explore and establish additional opportunities and partnerships statewide to employ and scale justice-based initiatives.

5) Assist with various community engagement activities including meeting facilitation, community outreach, organizing events, and data collection.

6) Utilize interview and transcription skills to document. Useful Skills: writing background, active listening, adaptability, research, program assessment, and self-motivated.
